Caring for Natural Household Textiles: Washing Linen Bedding, Tablecloths, and Wool Throws for Long Life
Prevent fiber breakage, shrinkage, and fabric-softener buildup on flax linen sheets, cotton towels, and merino or lambswool blankets.

Why Less Detergent and Cool Water Preserve Plant Fibers
Modern high-efficiency (HE) washing machines use a fraction of the water required by older top-loading agitators. Using more than one to two tablespoons of concentrated liquid detergent leaves un-rinsed surfactant trapped inside flax linen and cotton terry loops, making towels feel stiff and scratchy over time. Linen drapery can be cared for the same way; our window treatments and layered lighting guide shows how to hang it.
Wash flax linen in cool or lukewarm water (30°C to 40°C / 85°F to 104°F) on a gentle cycle with plenty of room for water to circulate around the fabric.
Household Textile Laundering & Drying Reference
Match water temperature and spin speeds to the fiber structure of your household linens:
| Textile Fiber | Water Temperature | Spin Speed | Drying Method |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100% Flax Linen Bedding | Lukewarm (30°C–40°C) | Low to Medium (600–800 RPM) | Tumble low until barely damp; line finish |
| Combed Cotton Bath Towels | Warm (40°C) | High (1,000+ RPM) | Tumble medium with wool dryer balls (no softener) |
| Lambswool & Merino Throws | Cold Handwash (20°C–30°C) | Press in towel (do not wring) | Dry flat on mesh rack away from direct sun/heat |
| Washed Cotton Canvas Slipcovers | Cold (30°C) | Medium (800 RPM) | Air dry and refit onto cushions while 10% damp |
